So, it seems I’m going to London. Eventually.
The plane that I was supposed to be on is about 1/3 of the way over the Atlantic right now en route to Heathrow Airport. A few words of advice for anyone planning to study in the UK: apply for your visa as early as humanly possible. Don’t feel a sense of false comfort when your friends tell you that they received theirs in as little as 3 days. Don’t use studying for finals as an excuse to wait on renewing your passport. Don’t use your full-time summer internship and long nights with friends in NYC as an excuse to put off completing your visa application- even if you think that applying just over a month in advance will work out fine, it won’t. You’ll probably have to wait three full weeks for a biometric data appointment and the consulate will be experiencing 7-business day delays on reviewing applications.. trust me on that.
Anyway, looking forward..
I’m tentatively scheduled to arrive in London on the morning of September 7, a full week from this Monday. Hopefully I won’t have to wait that long- if I receive my visa sooner than that, my travel agent has assured me that she’ll get me on the next flight out.
While it’s certain that I’ll miss a few days of awesome orientation activities (I’m slightly bitter, but what can I do? It was my misjudgment, my fault, and I’ve accepted it), there’s a chance that I won’t have to miss my first core lecture on Thursday (and thus have to make up the work). My fingers are crossed.
When I eventually get to London, I’ll be taking two classes for the first half of the semester: British and European Marketing Strategy (the core class for my Advertising major) & Britain and Europe- A New Beginning (for my International Relations minor). The second half of the semester I’ll probably have an internship at Spirit Advertising (depending on the outcome of my interview) and be taking a seminar in general advertising strategy.
I know that I can and will learn a lot from my internship/classes, but I’ll be honest.. what I’m looking forward to the most are obviously my 3-day weekends and mid semester break. There are so many things and places I’d love to see, both in and outside of London. I don’t know if everything is going to work out exactly the way that I want it to, but I’m hoping I can fill this blog with stories of several awesome trips throughout mainland Europe & the UK. Time will tell. :)
